Police in Hindiro sector of Ngororero district rescued a two-week baby on May 11, apparently who had been abandoned by the mother in the bush in Gatenga cell.
The District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police Prosper Nshimiyimana said the baby was reported by area residents who heard it groaning in the bush in wee hours of the evening.
“Residents called Police and we intervened immediately, rescued the baby and took him to FOSACOM health centre for medical check up to find out if it had not had health complications. It was at the time wrapped in clothes,” CIP Nshyimiyimana said.
He also said that residents provided information on the suspected mother identified as Florence Mutesi, 22, who was later arrested.
Mutesi, who hails from Bweramana sector in Ruhango district, argued that she decided to abandon the tot in the bush because she had no means to look after it.
“The father of the child had refused to support me and I saw this as the only option,” she Mutesi claimed.
She identified the father as Leonce Muneza, a driver operating in Kigali.
Mutesi was identified and reported by a family, where she had gone to get shelter for the night.
CIP Nshimiyimana condemned the inhuman act adding that abandoning a child, when you have no means to look after it, is not an option.
“There are other ways to look after the baby including approaching authorities for help instead of resorting to almost killing the innocent child,” he said.
He also advised girls to always plan when to have children and appealed to the public to fight drug abuse, which he said is one of the illegal acts that lead to unwanted pregnancies.
