More than 100 staff at Kabaya District hospital in Ngororero District have been trained in fire safety as part of the ongoing Rwanda National Police (RNP) countrywide awareness to prevent fire emergencies.
The awareness, which is currently targeting workers in health facilities, including hospitals and health centres, is spearheaded by the RNP Fire and Rescue Brigade (FRB).
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Paul Gatambira, said that this is part of RNP to improve public safety and particularly to prevent disasters and loss of lives resulting from reckless usage of electricity, cooking gas as electric appliances.
?The training and awareness is designed to equip the public with necessary knowledge and skills to help them preventing and respond to fire. They are introduced to causes and components of fire, different types of fire extinguishers and how to use them, fire drills and the procedures of evacuating people from facilities in case of fire,? said ACP Gatambira.
The awareness also involves fire safety inspection in facilities and to advise on precautionary measures.
Emmanuel Habinshuti, the Director in-charge of Administration and Finance (DAF) at Kabaya hospital thanked RNP for the training.
?Fire safety is important because we use electricity and cooking gas in our homes and places of work. Understanding how safe to use them and what to do when fire breaks out puts you on a safer side," said Habinshuti.
