Ngororero: Man arrested with stolen UECL electric cables

Police in Ngororero District, on November 3, arrested one Desiré Sebugirigiri with about 1000 metres of electric cables stolen from Energy Utility Corporation Limited.

The District Police Commander of Ngororero, Senior Supt. Marc Gasangwa said that the suspect was arrested in Kabaya Cell of Kabaya Sector following a complaint filed by EUCL in Ngororero.

“Recently, EUCL Ngororero branch filed a theft complaint, and investigations were immediately started. The cables were intercepted as they were being transported in a vehicle registration number RAB 012S,” Senior Supt. Gasangwa said.

He thanked members of the public, who provided information that led to the recovery of the stolen public goods.

“When you steal such cables, you are derailing the government rural electrification programme, and denying people to have electricity in time; it’s everyone’s right to stand up and fight such, and ensure that such public infrastructures are protected,” the DPC said.

Theft without violence or threat, under article 300 of the penal code, is punishable with an imprisonment of up to two years and a fine of two to five times of the stolen property.

Destroying public infrastructures under article 406 of the penal code is punishable with an imprisonment of up to five years, and a fine of up to ten times the value to the destroyed property.
