Police in Ngoma District, yesterday, arrested two men in connection with destruction and theft of power installation equipments belonging to Rwanda Energy Group.
The Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, said that the two suspects were arrested in Karenge cell of Kibungo Sector transporting the electricity equipment to unidentified place.
He identified the suspects as Jacques Bucyensenge, 31, who was working on contract with REG and Christophe Isingizwe, 22.
“They were traveling on a motorcycle RD 814B with power meter boxes (cash-power machines) as well as rolls of copper and aluminum wire cables and other electric items reportedly stolen from REG branch in Ngoma,” CIP Kanamugire said.
“Some of these items are vandalized and stolen from houses leading to power outage or stolen from REG stores. Fortunate enough, through information from the people we managed to identify these two people, they were trailed and arrested red-handed with some of the stolen electric equipment,” he added.
“We handed them over to RIB (Rwanda Investigations Bureau) to continue with investigations, which will inform if there are other people connected to this criminal acts to be arrested,” CIP Kanamugire said.
Article 406 stipulates that, any person who willfully destroys or damages in any way, in all or a part, buildings, bridges, dams, water pipes, water pipe routes, roads, railways or any other means of communication or electric power infrastructure, wells or any other buildings which do not belong to him/her, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of two to five years and a fine of twice to ten times the value of the damaged property.
