Ngoma: Man held over distilling illicit gin

Valence Mvuyekure, a resident of Gashanda Sector in Ngoma district has been arrested for allegedly distilling an illicit gin commonly known as Kanyanga.

Mvuyekure was arrested red-handed on September 5 after he was found distilling the illegal gin at his home.

He is currently detained at Kibungo Police Station.

He was reported to Police by neighbours. Police also recovered about 13 liters of Kanyanga which the suspect had already distilled.

Chief Superintendent Moses Gatare, the District Police Commander commended members of the public who reported Mvuyekure's unlawful business.

He urged the general public to shun engaging in illegal businesses and other crimes but instead switch to other profitable lawful businesses.

He appealed to the public to play a key role in fighting such criminal acts by mainly sharing information with security organs to ensure that those involved are arrested and brought to book.

Article 594 of the Rwandan penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
