A local businessman in Mutendeli Sector of Ngoma District identified as Emmanuel Niyonzima, has been taken into custody in connection with attempted bribery.
Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, said that Niyonzima was arrested on Saturday after he tried to bribe a Police officer with Rwf50, 000.
"Police had earlier arrested one Alex Ndayambaje over defilement, so Niyonzima tried to bribe the officer in charge so as to release the suspect. He was arrested red-handed in presence of investigators," CIP Kanamugire said.
The spokesperson warned against such criminal acts.
"There is no toralence; corruption denies or affects service delivery, denies people justice like in this case...the police officer would have gone against ethical standards, committed a crime and the victim wouldn't get justice," he said.
"If a crime is alleged to have been committed go through normal legal channels to prove your innocence, contrary to that you will also be facing other offences before courts of law," he advised.
