Ngoma: Man held over attempted bribery

Law enforcement organs have arrested a man in Ngoma District in connection with attempting to offer a bribe to withdraw his case related to distilling and selling f illicit brew.

Boniface Noheri, 28 was arrested on Tuesday in Mutenderi Sector, Mutendeli Cell, Cyanyunga Village giving a bribe of Rwf13, 000.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for Easter region, said that the suspect was allegedly trying to corrupt security organs to forego the case.

“Police was informed that one Boniface Noheri reached out to some members of security organs in Mutenderi so as to ignore his criminal activities. 

He had previously escaped the arrest during the operation against drug dealers and distillers of illicit substances in particular; he called those handling his case and tried to seduce them with the bribe. He was arrested red-handed after those he was attempting to corrupt brought the matter before their superiors,” said CIP Twizeyimana. 

CIP Twizeyimana warned of "zero tolerance policy on corruption or bribery in our country because it has diverse effects on individuals, service delivery, governance, justice and development."

“We advise the public to avoid anything that would tempt them into either offering or receiving bribes, and encourage sharing of information on those involved to ensure that they are arrested to face the law.”

Law N° 54/2018 of 13/08/2018 on fighting against corruption in article 4, stipulates any person who gives, solicits, accepts or receives, by any means, an illegal benefit for himself/ herself or another person or accepts a promise in order to render or omit a service under his or her mandate or uses his or her position to render or omit a service, commits an offence. 

Upon conviction, he/she is liable to imprisonment for a term of more than five (5) years but not more than seven (7) years with a fine of three (3) to five (5) times the value of the given or solicited bribe.
