Ngoma: Local leaders urged to step-up fight against crime

At least 120 local leaders in Ngoma District met on July 18 to discuss various issues related to security and fighting crime.

The meeting was co-chaired by the district mayor, Aphrodis Nambaje and the District Police Commander, Senior Supt. Janvier Mutaganda.

The meeting observed that security in the district is generally calm, but resolved to strengthen collective efforts to deal with security challenges that still exist.

The mayor reiterated that security is a "key pillar development and must be sustained."

“Security is every citizen’s responsibility, but you are their leaders to ensure that community policing initiatives are successful," the mayor said.

“Encourage and engage residents in the fight against anything that may threaten their safety and development,” he said.

The DPC outlined drug trafficking and abuse, gender based violence, child abuse and corruption as some of the high impact crimes that should be given emphasis in fighting them.

“Issues like illicit drugs, domestic and gender-based violence and child abuse have high impact to societal development. We need to have and understand a similar approach to fight and prevent such crimes," the DPC said.

The leaders were also urged to use their influence and close proximity to the community to advise young generations to desist from abusing drugs but rather  engage in income generating ventures.
