Negligence major cause of road accidents

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has cautioned motorcycle taxi operators and drivers for their continued negligence on roads, leading to loss of lives and destruction of public infrastructure.

The warning follows a road security report for the month of January which indicates that majority 58.6 percent of the total accidents recorded were due to negligence.

Bad maneuvers also accounted for 28.8 percent of the total incidents registered.

A total of 86 accidents were registered in January killing 20 people and injuring 117 others.

“In general, road accidents reduced compared to the same period last year, but we still lose people due to the negligence of some motorcycle operators and drivers. Anyone who will be caught breaching traffic rules will be dealt with accordingly,” Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the Spokesperson of the Traffic and Road Safety department, warned.

Accidents reduced by 13.3 percent compared to the same period last year.
About 21.8 percent of the accidents involved motorcycles while 20.8 percent involved pick-ups.

About 70 percent of the accidents occurred in Kigali, followed by the Southern, Northern, Eastern and Western provinces in that order.

The Rwanda National Police conducts periodic awareness to promote road safety.

“We will continue theses awareness programmes to educate road users to respect traffic rules and to change the mindset of careless drivers and motorists, who still pose danger to road security,” he explained.

He also said that they will erect sign posts in other places considered as hotspots.
