Rwanda National Police (RNP) teamed up with local residents in Shingiro Sector in Musanze District on November 19, to rescue a newly born baby that had been heartlessly dumped in a pit latrine by its mother.
The baby was rushed to Gatagara Health Centre where doctors, yesterday, said it was in good health.
The mother identified as Angelique Nyiransekuye, a 21 year old, was still living with her parents at the time of committing the crime.
Police investigations indicate that the suspect gave birth at around noon on November 19 at her parents’ home, before dumping the tot in a pit, shortly after.
The suspect was, however, spotted by a child identified as Manirakaza, who hurriedly informed elders in the neighborhood that she saw the suspect heading to the pit latrine with a baby.
Residents in the area immediately informed Police and rushed to the scene and hoisted the baby out of the pit.
The Northern Province Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Christopher Semuhungu, condemned the act, which he described as “wild.”
He urged local leaders especially at village and Cell level to identify families with social problems and intervene before such differences lead into loss of lives.
The suspect confessed to the crime and requests to be pardoned. She argued that she had no means to take care of the baby.
Aimable Iyakaremye, Shingiro sector Executive Secretary, condemned the criminal act calling residents to join efforts to ensure infanticide cases are prevented.
Iyakaremye who blamed unwanted pregnancies to poverty, called upon youth to form cooperatives and apply for loan from micro finance schemes to help them set up small income generating ventures.
