Secondary school students from various schools in Musanze District have vowed to kick drug abuse out of their community and actively sensitize residents in the community against the vice.
The pledge was made by over 100 students on December 5, during a meeting with police and government officials attached to the District.
Nkotsi Sector Executive Secretary, Alex Munyamahoro, urged the students to be patriotic and love their country by abstaining from all illegal deeds including drug abuse and report those involved to authorities.
“You owe a lot to your country. Your future is bright but there are a lot of temptations and challenges that you will have to fight along the way. Those who are strong willed and shun drug abuse and laziness will definitely make it in life,” he said.
Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP), Sylvestre Kagurusu, District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), cited that the youth are always vulnerable to abusing drugs because of peer pressure and bad parenting – and he called upon society leaders to pay attention to the youth and help them overcome their challenges.
“Abusing drugs leads to permanent consequences like early pregnancies and dropping out of school at an early age. Therefore, all of us must join forces against this scourge. Abstaining from drugs will keep you mentally and physically fit to take hold of your bright future,” he said.
Rwanda National Police frequently conducts anti-drug abuse campaigns countrywide – the latest being an operation launched in September this year targeting drug abuse in schools. The campaign reached out to 200 students countrywide.
