Musanze: Students asked to stand up against drug abuse

Students of Gitinda Secondary School located in Cyuve Sector of Musanze District, were this week sensitised on dangers of illicit drugs and asked to stand the vice.

They were also enlightened on forms of child abuse and gender based violence and urged to report any such human rights violations in their homes and communities.

While addressing about 500 students, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Viateur Ntiyamira, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) told them that cannabis, kanyanga, all gins packed in banned plastic bags, mayirungi and other locally made brews are classified as narcotic drugs.

"Selling or consuming these substances, therefore, becomes are crime under the law," CIP Ntiyamira told the students.

He appealed to them to desist from such acts and to report dealers and consumers in their communities or at school.

CIP Ntiyamira explained to them the national rehabilitation programmes that mainly focuses on the young people and urged them to report anyone they suspect to be an addict so that they are rehabilitated.

Sensitisation and rehabilitation is part of the national programme to kill the local market.

Similar anti-drug message were also extended to over 1,000 students of Nyakariro Secondary School in Nyakariro Sector in Rwamagana District.
