Musanze: Residents resolve to strengthen night patrols

About 3000 residents of Musanze District met on Wednesday in a community security meeting held in Gataraga Sector and discussed ways to strengthen community policing measures against crimes.

The meeting was also attended by the Mayor of Musanze District Jean Damascene Habyarimama, the District Police Commander, Supt. Patrick Butera as well as village, cell and sector leaders.

The residents highlighted petty theft and drug abuse as one of the security concerns in the area.

They resolved to strengthen community night patrols, identify and report drug dealers and to for parents to monitor their children especially against drugs and to ensure they go to school.

Mayor Habyarimama thanked the residents for their responsiveness in security and development aspects.

He urged them to also be active in development programmes.

“National security starts with the social well-being of the citizenry. This is why government development initiatives like Vision Umurenge Program (VUP), Mutuelle de santé (public health insurance), family planning and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres are all designed to guarantee your well-being," the Mayor said, urging them to implement these initiatives.

The DPC Supt. Patrick Butera reminded the residents that fighting criminality and ensuring security is equally the responsibility of each and every Rwandan.

"This is why we have community policing which give you power to ensure your own security through night patrols and sharing information on wrongdoers with security organs," Supt. Butera said.
