Musanze residents recover Rwf1.8 million stolen from businesswoman

Residents of Kigombe cell, Muhoza sector in Musanze district, on Wednesday, apprehended and handed to Police a 23-year old man who allegedly stole Rwf1.9 million from a hardware shop in Musanze town.

The residents also recovered Rwf1.8 million from the suspected identified as Emmanuel Sibomana, who had tried to flee with the money. He is currently detained at Muhoza Police station.

The shop belongs to an area businesswoman, Marceline Nyirambarushimana.
Nyirambarushimana said the suspect stole keys to the drawer where the money was kept.

“I had just finished counting the money as I was planning to go and bank it.

But I first locked it the drawer to attend to other things. When I came back from the backyard, I was shocked to find the drawer open and the money missing,” Nyirambarushimana narrated.

“But I had seen him (suspect) roaming in front of my shop…it seems he was watching all my moves. So I informed people who were in the nearby, who pursued and apprehended him red-handed with only Rwf1.8 million,” she added.

“I thank God that I recovered almost all my money. I also thank my fellow Rwandans and Police for the quick response to help me, which is an act of bravery and support required to help each other in such times of need. When I lose, even the country gets affected because it will hamper my development and the country too,” Nyirambarushimana noted.

Jean Claude Nizeyimana, executive secretary of Kigombe cell and head of community policing committee in the area said “there is a spirit of support” among area residents, adding that most wrongdoers are apprehended by the community and civilian patrols and handed over to Police.

The District Police Commander, Supt. Silas Karekezi, said crimes such as drug abuse, gender and domestic violence, assault and theft that used to be high in Musanze, have also reduced tremendously because of the partnership with the community and tight night patrols, who provide information on all those involved that lead to their arrest.
