Musanze: Police urges students to report drug dealers

Police in Musanze District have urged students of Muhabura Integrated Polytechnic College to desist from abusing and selling narcotic drugs, and to report people in their communities they suspect to be drug dealers.

They were also urged to refrain from other malpractices especially those related to sexual and to focus on their education.

The call was made by Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Northern Region Police Spokesperson, while addressing students on May 4.

He expressed concern over the present situation of youth involvement in abusing and selling especially cannabis, and told the students that drugs are the major obstacle to education and youth development.

More than 70 per cent of people caught trafficking, selling and abusing drugs are the youth aged between 18 and 35 years, according to statistics.

"Each of you should an advisor, eye and ear of the other. Share your dreams and advise those you taking the wrong direction especially those you see or suspect to be abusing drugs,” CIP Twizeyimana said.

He reminded them that Police considers them as agents of safety and security.

“Effects of drug abuse are not only limited to the consumer but the society and can lead to insecurities since drug addicts may subconsciously commit crimes such as domestic violence, theft and homicides, which are sometimes reported in communities” he noted.

Cannabis are and other related substances very easy to get addicted to, he said, noting that it only takes one use to get hooked and ruin a student’s chances for a good life.

CIP Twizeyimana also advised students against the social and individual dangers of underage marriages and child pregnancies.

At the conclusion of the talk, two students volunteered to be ambassadors to influence their friends to make healthy and safe decisions through anti-drug clubs.
