Musanze: Police destroys illicit gins seized in two weeks

Police in Musanze district has destroyed scores of illicit gins that were seized in separate operations conducted in two weeks and also held an anti-crime sensitization campaign that aimed at tutoring residents on the dangers of smuggling such gin in the country and to their health.

The substances destroyed include 533 dozens of Blue Sky, 82 dozens of Chase Vodka, 17 dozens of Host Waragi, 6 dozens of Kitoko, 3 dozens of Empire and 38 sachets of Beat.

The gins powered were packet in non biodegradable plastic bags yet they are banned in Rwanda for being hazardous to the environment.

The exercises took place on March 20, in Muhoza sector of Musanze District and attended by hundreds of residents.

In his address to residents, the District Police Commander Superintendent of Police (SP) Aphrodis Gashumba thanked residents who tipped the police about traffickers of illicit gins, saying that “Your efforts have not been in vain; with the information you provide, we have been able to identify and arrest many drug dealers, and traffickers, and that also sends a strong message to even others still involved. Your active response and partnership is all that is required to reverse the trend.”

He added that; “We are seeing a lot of success through ownership and strong partnership by being the eyes and ears of security.”

In his address to the residents, the Executive Secretary of Muhoza Sector, Jean Pierre Manzi said that residents’ continued cooperation with the police has led to the reduction of crimes in the area including cases of smuggling contrabands as well as drug trafficking and consumption.

He added that; “We believe this partnership will drive the general goal of breaking the supply chain and we can only succeed by giving information to police at all times.”
