Musanze: Opinion leaders enhance public safety drive

Opinion leaders from Muhoza Sector of Musanze District have committed to enhance their efforts in ensuring public safety and security by working closely with security organs in crime prevention mechanisms.

They made the commitment during a recent meeting that tackled several security-related issues in their sector.

The meeting was also attended by the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP) Viateur Ntiyamira.

IP Ntiyamira told opinion leaders that Police embarked on community policing as means of reaching out to every Rwandan to empower them to take the lead in ensuring their own safety as well as security in their localities.

“Since we can’t be in all places at the same time, we believe through community policing we can prevent many crimes and this has been proven by the way Rwanda is ranked among the most secure countries in the world,” said IP Ntiyamira

He also went on to thank opinion leaders for their partnership and the trust they have in the police saying that this has facilitated the timely reporting of crimes.

“Secure society concentrate on their development activities and develop faster than those faced with high rates of criminality. If we are to maintain the rate of our development we need to ensure public safety and we do that collectively,” he said.

One of the opinion leaders, Pastor Jonas Mataboro said that their partnership with police has always been characterized by instant information sharing which helped very much in crime prevention within our localities.

“We highly thank the police for its continued outreach programmes where citizens are sensitized against some crimes and also equipped with knowledge about their rights and their role in crime prevention. As opinion leaders, we pledge to enhance our efforts in fighting and reporting crimes as well as working more closely with security organs,” he said.
