Musanze mayor warn reckless road users

The Mayor of Musanze District Winfrida Mpembyemungu warned drivers, commercial motorcycle and bicycle operators in the area against breach of road safety rules leading to accidents and loss of lives.

Mpembyemungu issued the warning on October 8 in a meeting attended by over 2000 motorcyclists and cyclists and heads of public transport cooperatives operating in Musanze.

The meeting also attended by the District Police Commander, Supt. Vincent Habintwari aimed at reminding road users their role in ensuring road safety.

“Ensuring road safety starts with you by valuing your lives and those you transport. If you feel your life is not worth anything, then you are in a wrong profession,” Mpembyemungu noted.

“Together, we can prevent accidents. The task should not be left to Police only; by respecting traffic rules, reporting reckless colleagues that put lives of others in danger, you will have played a bigger part in preventing accidents,” she added.

She also urged them to work with police to prevent other crimes through community policing.

Supt. Habintwari appealed to them to mind their speed, refrain from over loading, speaking on phone while driving, which are among the major causes of accidents.

“Accidents are not selective. By respecting road rules and regulations, you spare not only the lives of passengers and pedestrians but yours too,” he said.

He further urged them to be vigilant not to transport illegal luggage or passenger and instead report such people to police.
