Musanze grassroots leaders tipped on security

The mayor of Musanze District, Jean Damascene Habyarimana has appealed to local leaders in the district to play an active role in ensuring that security prevails in their respective communities.

The mayor was speaking in Kinigi Sector on November 15 where he addressed village chiefs and cell and sector executive secretaries as well as residents, on security and development issues.

He said peace and security must be maintained and improved to allow residents to embark on economic and social development activities.

Mayor Habyarimana reminded the leaders of their responsibilities in ensuring harmony in the community and participating in resolving any community conflict through mediation, collective problem resolutions and building trust and mutual understanding with residents.

He also reminded them that the implementation of the community policing concept starts with them and rests in their day-to-day duties.

He warned on the dire consequences of people involved in abetting crime.

“Gender related crimes like assault, rape and defilement are fueled by illicit drugs and alcohol abuse. These, among others, can be averted if we continue to strengthen measures work as a team in advancing ideals of security and development,” said the mayor.

He urged the grassroots leaders to be accountable to the people and aim for service excellence, but warned of “unacceptable acts that derail and affect the implementation of government development.”

He also reminded them that children are going back for their holidays and need close follow of everyone as parents and leaders in partnership with security organs to prevent them from engaging in malpractices and illegal acts.
