The voce mayor in charge of economic development for Musanze District, Jean Claude Musabyimana has urged motorcyclists operating on the district to be vigilant not to facilitate criminality or involve in illegal activities.
He made the call on April 29 while chairing a meeting of over 400 commercial motorcycles and also attended by the District Police Commander for Musanze, Senior Superintendent Benoit Nsengiyumva.
Musabyimana thanked the role police plays to involve all parties to ensure community safety including motorcyclists.
"These awareness programmes are important to further engage everyone because security should be a concern of us all," said Musabyimana. He urged them to operate in cooperatives, an effective way to achieve development.
SSP Nsengiyumva noted that although Rwanda enjoys security and peace today, it is paramount that every body takes part in building sustainable peace and security .
In the recent past, there has been cases where commercial motorcyclists have been caught in illegal and criminal activities, either hired by wrongdoers knowingly or their own criminal initiative.
Some of them have been caught transporting or selling illicit drugs like cannabis, kanyanga and other banned liquors.
SSP Nsengiyumva urged them to desist from such criminal acts and provide police with information about their colleagues or other people that ate involved and want to tarnish the image of their business profession.
He also appealed to them to ride carefully and respect traffic rules to avoid likely accidents resulting from negligence.
Muberuka Safari, the head of motorcycle cooperatives in the Northern Province also thanked RNP for the continued awareness and supporting their development endeavors.
The motorcyclist cooperatives in the Northern region are among those that have so far benefited from the RNP financial support in pursuit for human security.
