Police in Musanze District destroyed assorted contrabands that were seized in separate operations conducted in two weeks.

The public destruction exercise was held in Muhoza Sector on March 20.

The exercise that was attended by hundreds of residents also served as a platform in the ongoing sensitization campaign to strengthen cooperation with tje general population against illicit drugs in the country.

The substances destroyed include 533 dozens of Blue Sky, 82 dozens of Chase Vodka, 17 dozens of Host Waragi, 6 dozens of Kitoko, 3 dozens of Empire and 38 sachets of Beat.

The gins poured are also packed in non biodegradable plastic bags yet they are banned in Rwanda for being hazardous to the environment.

In his address to residents, the District Police Commander, Supt. Aphrodis Gashumba thanked residents who tipped the police about traffickers of illicit gins.

“Your efforts have not been in vain; with the information you provide, we have been able to identify and arrest many drug dealers, and traffickers, and that also sends a strong message to even others still involved. Your active response and partnership is all that is required to reverse the trend," the DPC said.

He added: “We are seeing a lot of success through ownership and strong partnership by being the eyes and ears of security."

The Executive Secretary of Muhoza Sector, Jean Pierre Manzi said that residents’ continued cooperation with the police has led to the reduction of crimes in the area including cases related to drug trafficking and consumption.

"We believe this partnership will drive the general goal of breaking the supply chain and we can only succeed by giving information to police at all times," Manzi said.
