Police in Muhanga District is holding one Theodore Niyombonwa for allegedly forging stamps of various institutions.
Niyombonwa was taken into custody on Monday following information that he was involved in acts of forgery, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said.
“He was at the time of his arrest found with forged stamps of various institutions including APERUDI College de Bethel of Ruhango District and that of Inades Formation Rwanda,” CIP Kayigi said.
Inades in a non-profit making association mainly engaged in socio-economic activities especially through training of rural population on modern farming.
“The person licensed to make stamps operating in Muhanga city got suspicious after Niyombonwa, who was his client, ordered stamps of various institutions. Out of suspicion that Niyombonwa could be a fraudster, he decided to report to the Police and the suspect was arrested,” the spokesperson explained.
Niyombonwa is a pastor at a local church in Muhanga called Philadelphia.
Article 609 stipulates that; “any person who forges or alters documents by forged signature or fingerprint, falsifying documents or signatures or impersonation, forging agreements, its provisions, obligations, discharged obligations shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of more than five years to seven years and a fine of Rwf300, 000 to Rwf3 million.”
It is not yet clear if he had used the stamps to dupe unsuspecting people, but Kayigi said that the suspect has been handed over to Rwanda Investigations Bureau (RIB) for further investigations.
He thanked the person that provided timely information and urged the business community to always be vigilant against people that would try to use their services to gain access to criminal acts.
