The District Police Commander of Muhanga, Supt. Thierry Munanira has urged commercial motorcyclists in the district to desist from tendencies that may put them into conflicts with the law.
He appealed to them to exercise their community policing rights and report people they suspect to be involved in criminal acts.
Supt. Munanira made the call on November 5, in Nyamabuye Sector while addressing heads and representatives of four tax-motor cooperatives operating in Muhanga.
The meeting was part of the regular policing outreach exercise to sensitize the community against lawlessness.
“Some criminals like drug traffickers and thieves use motorcycles, so be vigilant not to be used by wrongdoers,” the DPC said.
He also warned those who deal in illicit drugs or connive with drug dealers to help them beat security, and urged them to report such members, who tarnish the image of their transport business.
Some motorcyclists act as informers for drug traffickers.
In the recent past, there have been cases where commercial motorcyclists have been caught in illegal and criminal activities, either hired by wrongdoers knowingly or their own criminal initiative.
Also discussed in the same meeting include road safety standards and the reckless behavior of motorcyclists on roads, which lead to fatal accidents.
Motorcycles account for majority involved or cause of accidents, according to statistics.
