Muhanga: Commercial motorcyclists told to stand up against crimes

Commercial motorcyclists should play a vital role in fighting crime by partnering with police and other authorities to eliminate crime in their communities.

Police also cautioned them to desist from abetting crime by transporting wrong doers to steal or cause havoc in the community and urged them to collaborate through the provision of alerts on any activity that may undermine safety and security in society.

The call was made by the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Musabyimana on October 17, while meeting with over 70 members of COOTAMOMU, a motorcyclist’s cooperative in Muhanga district.

“You should also desist from voluntarily or unknowingly participating and aiding illegal and criminal activities and help your communities in maintaining peace and safety for both lives and property,” said IP Musabyimana.

“Residents must be protected against criminality of any form, some criminals masquerade as motorists yet they are drug dealers, burglars or suspected in other crimes. You should cooperate with Police by identifying such individuals and report them so that we can together overcome crime,” he said.

With regards to road safety, the motorcyclists were also urged to avoid carelessness and dangerous maneuvers and respect traffic rules in order to enforce safety for road users.

Following the meeting, the chairperson of COOTAMOMU, Ephreim Hakinayezu, hailed police for reaching out to members and enlightening them about the law.

He promised to share the messages to other members in a bid to eliminate the bad apples among members.
