Muhanga: Commercial motorcyclists reminded on safe use of road

Commercial motorcyclists operating in Muhanga District were on February 1, reminded to use the road responsibly to ensure their safety and that of other road users.

Inspector of Police (IP) Abdoul Hakim Rutalindwa, while speaking to moto-taxi operators in Nyamabuye Sector, dwelt much on the dangerous behaviour and action by commercial motorcyclists, which result into fatal accidents.

"Some of you ride on high speed, without a helmet and make manoeuvres that put you at high risk of causing an accident. Such behaviour should stop, no one wakes up in the morning saying that he or she wants to die. You're out there to work, get money, develop yourselves and support your families," IP Rutalindwa said.

He added: "When you involve in an accident, you use your savings to foot the medical bills and others even sell their property to raise money to nurse  lifetime injuries; others lose their lives and in each of these scenarios dependents also suffer. Value your lives and respect road safety standards."

Majority of the road accidents are either caused or involve commercial motorcyclists.

He also cautioned them against abetting crimes especially facilitating drug dealers.

Some motorcyclists have been arrested transporting narcotic drugs and stolen or smuggled goods.

Motorcycles used in these criminal activities are also impounded.

IP Rutalindwa urged them to instead be community policing agents and report people they suspect to be involved in unlawful acts or who try to use them in criminal activities like transporting drugs, so as to be arrested.

The motorcyclists committed to report drug dealers but also their members, who tarnish the image of their transport business by stealing from their passengers and transporting wrongdoers.
