Muhanga: Commercial cyclists tipped on fighting drugs

Police in Muhanga District, on September 11, held a meeting with about 300 commercial cyclists to strengthen partnership against illicit drugs.

The meeting was also attended by grassroots leaders and heads of commercial cyclists associations.

While addressing the cyclists at Muhanga stadium, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Musabyimana, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), urged them to report drugs dealers some of whom hire them to transport their substances.

He also observed that some of them abuse drugs including smoking cannabis, which increase risks of involving in incidents.

"Some of you abuse drugs and this is deadly to you and the passengers you're transporting. It again becomes your responsibility to report your colleagues with such criminal and life threatening behaviours," IP Musabyimana told the cyclists.

"Be vigilant and report people you suspect to be involved in drug related crimes and let the Police and other concerned institutions find out the truth," he added.

He further urged participants of the meeting to play an equally shared responsibility in maintaining road safety, by avoiding reckless and dangerous maneuvers and "use the road in the best way that guarantees your safety."

On his part, Alex Nyirangendahimana, the head of cooperatives in Nyamabuye sector, appealed to participants to join cooperatives where they are able to access development services easily.

Nyirangendahimana also reminded them that they have a duty to be actively part of government security and development programmes like Umuganda and other human security activities.
