The Mayor of Muhanga District Beatrice Uwamariya has urged church leaders and followers to be agents of security and development in their communities
Uwamariya said that freedom of worship cannot be freely exercised in an insecure environment adding that security is the pillar to peace and development.
She was speaking during a consultative meeting between district authorities, police and heads and representatives of various faith-based organizations operating in Muhanga, to jointly lay plans related to community policing and community development.
The mayor asked them to utilize their clergy positions to also convey messages of peace, respect of rule of law and active participation in government development programmes.
She said messages of peace and security, and being tolerant to each another should be put at the forefront in your interactions with the congregations.
“I want to encourage the Church to address the issue of lawlessness mainly drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, and guide parents on such issues,” mayor Uwamariya told clerics.
The District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Jean Bosco Karega, also urged them to guide their followers on values of security, patriotism and ensuring crime-free societies.
Church leaders were also asked to regulate their sound during their worshiping services not to affect the rights and beliefs of others.
