Motorists cautioned against drunk driving

Drunk driving or driving under the influence (DUI) is one of the causes of road accidents and related fatalities.

It is one of the concerns and threat to road safety being addressed in the ongoing Gerayo Amahoro campaign.

Gerayo Amahoro road safety campaign is designed to drive behavioral change from observing traffic rules and regulations by law to making right choices and eventually turn road safety into a culture.

The continuous campaign, however, is a mix of awareness and operations to penalize errant motorists, whose individual behaviors on road, including intoxicated driving, continue to threaten lives of other road users.

Scores of drivers and motorcyclists, have therefore, been arrested for drunk driving or riding, including one Appolinaire Nzirorera, 58, who was apprehended on January 30, at Kigali Automobile Inspection Centre (AIC) where he had taken a vehicle, Fuso registration number RAF 095U, for inspection.

"Police technicians at the AIC suspected him to be drunk because of the way he was staggering and talking. When they tested him with a breathalyzer, he was found to be drunk with blood alcoholic content at 2.21 milliliters," said CP John Bosco Kabera, the RNP spokesperson.

Driving or riding is prohibited when the blood alcoholic concentration is above 0.8 milliliters.

"Make right choices that makes you and others safe on road. Driving while drunk is suicide," CP Kabera said.

He advised motorists to always look for alternative means of transport when they drink instead of putting their lives and those of others, in danger of accidents, lifetime injuries and likely loss of lives.
