Commercial motorcyclists and cyclists have vowed to contribute to lasting peace and security by ensuring that their profession is not misused by criminals who may bring harm to people and property.
The commitment was particularly made by members of the Bugesera District motorists and cyclists association, during a meeting on January 30, aimed at discussing ways forward on how to improve the profession.
In an overwhelming vote of confidence, the members agreed to apprehend or report any of their fellows who may engage in criminal activities like burglary, theft, drugs smuggling, and knowingly transporting terrorists, among others.
The District Police Commander Supt. Richard Rubagumya, commended the members for their professionalism and urged them to continue the commitment to protect society from any individuals or groups that may want to hide inside the profession in order to perform illegal acts.
“We are aware that your profession attracts criminals; and it is up to you to ensure that they do not spoil your good name. Work with police by providing timely information whenever you suspect anyone of trying to commit a crime,” he said.
“Always adhere to the law, wear your uniforms and respect traffic rules. This way, the criminals will be isolated and will be easy to identify.”
Rwanda National Police collaborates with motorcyclists through the element of community policing and last year, the force donated about Rwf5 million to the around 16 cooperatives of commercial motorcyclists as part of its human security initiatives and poverty alleviation.
