Mutezinatare made the call on August 7, during discussions with over 230 commercial motorcyclists and cyclists in the region.

The meeting that also attracted local leaders, police officers and partners in crime prevention operating in the western region, was conducted as part of Rwanda National Police (RNP) sensitization campaigns aimed at fostering traffic safety.

In his address, CSP Mutezintare noted that all road users need to work together to improve traffic safety, which calls for respect of road rules at all times.

"Road safety is everyone's responsibility and there are certain behavior traits among motorcyclists and cyclists that should be stopped immediately, such as not respecting traffic lights, over speeding and overloading among others,” he said.

“Such dangerous acts should changes in order to make roads safer and more pleasant place for everyone. If drivers, cyclists and pedestrians unite in respect and consideration for one another, getting roads will be safer and more enjoyable for everyone.”

He also reminded motorcyclists and cyclists to respect pedestrians, abide by traffic lights not to cycle on the pavement.

“We need to build a culture of tolerance and patience between cyclists, motorists, pedestrians and all other road users. Sharing the road safely is the key to encouraging more cyclists on our roads,” he noted.

RNP regularly conducts traffic campaigns throughout the country targeting pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in order to discuss ways to advance traffic safety.
