Commercial motorcyclists must avoid carelessness and dangerous maneuvers and respect traffic rules in order to enforce safety for road users.
The message was delivered in Karongi District on March 3, during a Police meeting with commercial motorcycle operators operating in the district.
“When you ignore road signals, accidents are bound to happen; that is why you need to act responsibly at all times. Vices like overloading, over speeding are common and must stop,” Superintendent, Dieudonné Rwangombwa, the District Police Commander said.
“You should also be accountable to each other through your cooperatives and ensure that every member adheres to the rules and regulations of good road usage. Some motorcyclists adamantly refuse to wear their uniforms while others are known to be reckless. Fighting these misconducts should be part of the cooperatives,” he added.
Commercial motorcyclists are among majority victims or cause of road accidents.
The chairman of Karongi motorcyclists cooperative, Modeste Ngamije, commended Police for always reaching out the operators, and called upon his compatriots to adhere to the rules and also provide information to Police that facilitates the prevention or solving of any crime.
RNP carries out outreach programs to motorcycle operators, which include sensitization and donations to promote their professionalism and also encourage them to fight poverty. Last year, RNP donated over Rwf5 million to various motorcycle cooperatives as part of the force's community development initiatives.
