Motorcyclists in Gasabo District, on Monday, apprehended and handed to Police one of their own for allegedly snatching valuables from his passengers and pedestrians.
Emmanuel Nawukuriryayo, 38, was intercepted in Remera Sector, Rukiri1 Cell, in Agashyitsi Village by motorcyclists and Irondo personnel after victims called for help.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said that Nawukuriryayo, on Monday at about 3am, snatched a handbag from a woman he had dropped in Agashyitsi Village.
“The bag contained IPhone 6, Rw105, 000 and other valuables. As he was fleeing, Nawukuriryayo also snatched a smart-phone from another woman, just in a distance. The two victims shouted at the top of their voice calling for help, and good enough other motorcyclists who were passing by pursued the suspect, they intercepted him with the help of Irondo personnel that was on patrol,” CIP Kayigi said.
All the stolen belongings were recovered, Kayigi said. He commended the community policing gesture exhibited by motorcyclists and the community night patrol (Irondo).
“Today, it’s easier to trace such motorcycles used in criminal activities. All motorcycles have been registered in a system by their federation (FERWACOTAMO). We request victims to always be quick to memorise or note down the number plates; it will be easier to trace it back to the owner and to identify the person that was using it that very night it was implicated in the criminal activity,” CIP Kayigi said.
