A commercial motorcyclist was arrested on November 12, in Kibungo Sector, Ngoma District for allegedly attempting to bribe a Police officer.
The suspect identified as Patrick Tumukunde had tried to give a bribe of Rwf20, 000 to a traffic Police officer after he was caught violating traffic rules and regulations, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.
“Tumukunde was stopped by a traffic Police officer at about 11am, he had violated road safety standards including having no helmet and s driver’s license. When the officer tried to penalize him according to the law, Tumukunde tried to bribe him with Rwf20, 000 and he was immediately taken into the custody over the crime,” CIP Kanamugire said.
“Tumukunde has been handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau in Kibungo. This should also sound as a warning that anyone who tries to bribe Police officers will be arrested to face justice,” the spokesperson warned.
He added: “There is zero tolerance when it comes to corruption or bribery in Rwanda National Police and in our country in general. We appeal to the general public to report such criminal attempts, which affect service delivery; services given to the wrong people or delayed to those that rightfully deserve them.”
