Over 150 motorcyclist taxi operators in Nyamasheke District met on February 18 and resolved to ensure their own safety and that of others by reporting anything that might interfere with the security in the area.
The meeting was held in Ntendezi cell, Ruharambuga sector and brought together motorists operating in the areas of Ntendezi, Buginga, Shagazi, Gashirabwoba, Karengera, Bushenge, Shangi, and Nyabitekeri.
Elysee Bakundukize, one of the motorists challenged his colleagues to always abide by the traffic rules, not to involve in illegal activities like drug abuse, theft and transporting evil minded people, which he said has tarnished the image of their profession.
“We are now defined by bad things like breaching traffic rules and being the major cause of accidents which we should strive to revive to make our profession a better one,” Bakundukize told colleagues.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Adrien Rutagengwa lectured them on the ill-effects of crimes like drug abuse, and their role in how best to fight them.
CIP Rutagengwa told them that drug dealing is illegal and punished under Rwanda Penal Code and that it leads to assault, theft and domestic violence among others.
He also told them that drug consumption is harmful to health and urged those that could be consuming it to abstain to be healthy.
He also appealed to them to provide good service to their clients, be clean, and abide by road safety rules.
