Ongoing Police operations against motorcycle theft recovered three other stolen motorcycles from suspected thieves.
The motorcycles were recovered in Kirehe, Gatsibo and Kicukiro districts. Prime suspects were arrested in each of the separate cases.
In Kirehe, one Jean de Dieu Habimana was arrested red-handed with a motorcycle registration number of RC825V, which was stolen from Gatsibo last week.
Chief Inspector of Police Théobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province said that the arrest of Habimana followed “suspicions of theft” by Habimana’s uncle.
“Habimana stole the motorcycle from the parking yard in Kabarore Sector and fled with it to Kirehe. His uncle suspected a foul-play and informed the Police; that is how the motorcycle was located and recovered, and suspect taken into custody,” CIP Kanamugire said.
The motorcycle has since been returned to the rightful owner.
Another motorcycle registration number RD 847X, which was stolen in the night of March 29 in Rwisirabo Cell of Karangazi Sector in Nyagatare District was also recovered on Tuesday and returned to the owner, Janvier Cyubahiro.
In Kigali, another motorcycle RE 303A was recovered from the suspected thief in Kigarama Sector, Kicukiro District. The motorcycle had been violently taken from the owner, Evaliste Habimana in the night of Monday after a suspected thief guised as a passenger, and lured him in a trap where members of the criminal ring forcefully took the motorcycle.
Habimana, however, caused alarm, which attracted neighboring residents and through communication and information sharing with the Police, the suspected thieves were intercepted shortly after and the motorcycle recovered.
“When you look at all scenarios through which motorcycles are recovered, it is largely due to the vigilance and responsiveness of the people. The immediate response and information sharing is always vital in successful investigations, recovery of stolen or missing items, and arrest of suspected criminals,” Senior Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.
