The police-public partnership in the fight against drugs trade and consumption in Rubavu District has continued gain momentum.
On Wednesday, two other suspected drug traffickers were arrested as they tried to traffic cannabis into the country from the Democratic Republic of Cong (DRC), through porous borders.
The suspects are identified as Clementine Sifa Nishimwe and Vedaste Nshimyumuremyi.
The suspects’ illegal activities had been reported to police by area residents.
They had wrapped the illegal plant around their body to beat security checks.
Superintendent Vita Hamza, the Western Region Police Spokesperson hailed the partnership with citizenry in the battle to fight and prevent such criminal activities.
Sup Hamza advised residents in Rubavu District to shun engaging in all kind of illegal business particularly drug dealing.
Describing narcotic drugs as life destroyer, Supt Hamza called upon the public to strengthen their cooperation with Police in order to fight drug abuse.
He advised them to venture in lawful businesses rather than engaging illegal acts which bring them “troubles like prison sentence.”
They will be charged under article 598 of the penal code which stipulates that, any person who manufactures, sells, prescribes a drug, harmful products, cosmetics or body hygiene and other herbal substances prohibited in healing practice, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of Rwf 1 million to Rwf 5 million or one of these penalties.
