Marine Police Officers Complete Seamanship and Boat Handling Course

Twenty Marine Police officers, on Friday, September 26, completed a two-week Basic Seamanship, Small Boat Handling, and Marine Maintenance Course in Rubavu District, marking another key step in enhancing Rwanda’s maritime security capabilities.

The training conducted in Lake Kivu by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), combined both theoretical and practical components, focusing on equipping officers with essential skills in vessel handling, navigation, emergency response, and maintenance.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Rafiki Mujiji, Commandant of the National Police College (NPC), while speaking at the closing of the course, commended the trainees for their discipline and commitment.

“You are now better equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead. With the knowledge you have gained also comes the responsibility to apply it in real-life operations and to raise the overall standard of excellence.”

He emphasized the importance of continuous professional development in maritime policing.

“The marine environment is dynamic; Weather patterns change, technology advances, and new threats emerge. We must continue to invest in specialized training programmes to ensure our officers remain capable under all circumstances.”

He also thanked the trainers and productive partnership between UNITAR and Rwanda National Police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Charles Butera, Commanding Officer of the Police Marine Unit, described the training as a vital step toward enhancing operational readiness on Rwanda’s water bodies.

“This course underscores a critical step in strengthening operational capabilities in the maritime domain,” ACP Butera said. “Trainees invested time and energy to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure effectiveness while carrying out their duties.”
