Rwanda National Police (RNP) has detained a man suspected of stealing a motorcycle, as the force continues to clamp down on urban crime.

The suspect, Desire Twagirayezu was arrested on May 10 and is currently detained at Kicukiro Police Station, as further investigations commence.

Superintendent Modest Mbabazi, the Central Region Police spokesperson, said that he was at his home in Kagasa Cell, Gahanga Sector, where he had parked this motorcycle.

“Police in the District got information about the stolen vehicle and started conducting investigations, which led to Twagirayezu as the main suspect. It is understood that the motorcycle was stolen with the purposes of reselling it,” he said.

“Police is searching for other suspected criminals who are believed to be operating in a ring that steals motorcycles and either resells them or destroys them in search for spare parts demanded in garages.”

This motorcycle is currently parked at Kicukiro Police Station, and Police is also making efforts to trace the owner.

Superintendent Mbabazi commended residents who fed Police with information, but warned property owners that they should make immediate reports once they have been robbed in order to enable fast investigations.

He also called for more cooperation from the public, including road users and business community, to ensure crimes are jointly and effectively addressed.

“City of Kigali dwellers should take full ownership and responsibility in security. We also call upon our partners in crime prevention to tighten night patrols and share valuable, timely information with security organs, to ensure that those involved in crime are arrested.

He urged residents to switch to developmental activities that would help improve welfare instead of engaging in criminal activities that will always cause them troubles, including prison sentence and fines.

Police is at the helm of fighting motorcycle and vehicle theft, especially in the  City of Kigali, just last month, Police foiled a criminal ring involving five men suspected of involvement in car theft incidents in the country.
