Man held over fake stamps

A man in Kicukiro District has been arrested for allegedly forging stamps of various organisations.

Thadee Hitimana, a resident of Kabidandi Village in Kagasa Cell, Gahanga Sector, was arrested on October 3, during a police “targeted operation.”

According to the central region Police spokesperson Supt, Emmanuel Hitayezu they had received information about a person, who was forging and issuing stamps used on forged documents.

“The Police, acting on information provided by residents, mounted the search and arrested Hitimana in Gahanga. When officers searched his house they recovered stamps of various institutions,” said Supt Hitayezu told journalists at Gahanga Police Station, where the suspect is currently detained.

Some of the forged stamps recovered from his residence include those of Rwanda social Security Board (RSSB), SORAS and RADIANT, both insurance companies, and that of Gahanga Police station.

Supt. Hitayezu said that investigations are still underway to identify anyone that could have used the fake stamps to acquire any service illegally.

He also warned against going through fraudulent channels to acquire a service, and appealed to the public to report such individuals.

Under article 609 of the Rwandan penal code, any person, who forges or alters documents by forged signature or fingerprint, falsifying documents or signatures or impersonation, forging agreements, its provisions, obligations, discharged obligations shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of more than five years to seven years and a fine of Rwf300, 000 to Rwf3 million.”
