Police in Kicukiro District have arrested a 38 year old man for allegedly assaulting and injuring his six-year old boy.
Jean Baptist Nsanzimana, a resident of Kabeza Village in Kagesa Cell in Gahanga Sector, is currently detained at Gahanga Police station following his arrest in Friday.
It all started when Nsanzimana came back home and started beating up his wife over domestic misunderstandings.
However, the wife found her way out of the house and fled leaving their six-year old in the house.
With all the anger, the man turned to the innocent boy, who was at the time crying and terrified because of the violent scuffle between his parents, beat him up losing a tooth and left with bruises on the face.
The child was taken to Gahanga health centre for treatment.
Police spokesperson for the Central region, Senior Superintendent of police (SSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, condemned the violent act.
“In most cases, such domestic conflicts are fueled by illicit drugs; such men are in most cases under the influence of drugs, and their spouses and children end up becoming the victims,” SSP Hitayezu said.
“For a grown man and a parent to punch a child over and over… that’s an inhuman act that shouldn’t be tolerated and should be reported,” he added.
He called for strong community policing partnership against narcotic drugs, domestic violence and child abuse by reporting anyone they suspect to be involved in such, for quick response.
The spokesperson said that Nsanzimana will be charged with intentional assault causing injuries under article 218.
The article provided a term of imprisonment of up to two years, if convicted.
