Police in Kicukiro District is holding a 23-year old Ntakirutimana Ntawitumurame in connection with stealing a motorcycle.
Ntawitumurame was caught red-handed by community night patrols on Sunday night hours after the motorcycles plate number TVS RC 730R, went missing in Gatenga Sector, where the owner had parked it.
He was at the time of his arrest found pushing it after he failed to start it.
The suspect was handed over to police and he is currently held at Gikondo Police station.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Ntawitumurame was drinking from the same bar with the owner of the motorcycle identified as Wellars Nduwayo, when he (Ntawitumurame) eventually execused himself and pushed the motorcycle that was parked in front of the bar.
At the time of his arrest, the suspect was allegedly selling the motorcycle at Rwf250, 000.
The Police Spokesperson for the Central Region, Superintendent Modeste Mbabazi, advised the public to refrain from such acts.
“Criminals have no place in Rwanda and we should always work together with residents through community policing to ensure that peace and safety is sustained and criminals apprehended to face justice," Supt. Mbabazi said.
"Providing timely information and reporting crimes is paramount as it enables quick response and timely recovery of stolen equipment and arrest of suspected criminals,” he added.
He went on to say that Ntawitumurame was apprehended shortly after he stole the motorcycle because of this community policing security system in the country.
“We are hopeful that with more cooperation with the public, Police will continue to effectively do its job to protect lives and property,” said Mbabazi.
Article 300 of the Penal Code stipulates that anyone guilty of theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of the penalties.
