Man arrested over issuing fake National Identity Cards

A man identified as Celestin Ibambasi is detained at Nyamabuye Police station in Muhanga district after he was arrested for allegedly counterfeiting and issuing the national Identity Card.

He was apprehended on July 7 in Gitarama cell of Nyamabuye sector after he was implicated by his accomplice, Fulgence Nduwayezu, who was also apprehended with two other fake IDs.

Ibambasi is a driver while Nduwayezu is driving instructor at a driving school in Muhanga.

Chief Supt. Hubert Gashagaza, Police spokesperson for the Southern region said they are also investigating reports also implicating the duo in forging and issuing driving licence.

"In one way or another, these fake documents will be noticed and those responsible will be apprehended. Driving licence can only be issued by Rwanda National Police while the ID  is only issued National ID centre; all other ways are illegal, fake and punishable by the law," CSP Gashagaza said.

Counterfeit is punishable under article  609 of the penal code and attracts a prison sentence between five and seven years.
