A man identified as Gasisi Kalim has been arrested in connection with attempting to bribe a Police officer and using a forged driver's license.
At the time of his arrest on Sunday in Gikondo, Kicukiro District, Gasisi was attempting to give a bribe of Rwf50,000.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie-Gorette Umutesi, the Police spokesperson for City of Kigali, said that the suspect was recently involved in a road accident and his traffic related documents were confiscated to facilitate the legal process.
"At the time of the accident, Gasisi had a foreign driver's license but was told to bring his local permit which he did. As soon as he left, Police officers realised that the Rwandan permit was forged," CIP Umutesi explained.
She added: "Later, Gasisi called the traffic Police officer handling the case saying that he wanted to buy him a drink. Suspecting that Gasisi was up to something unlawful, the officer informed his superiors and indeed Gasisi was arrested red-handed giving the officer a bribe of Rwf50,000, which was meant to prevent any further legal actions against him."
"Gasisi committed a traffic offence, then was found with a forged driver's license and as if that was not enough he tried to give a bribe. He will face the law for each of these offences," she said, warning especially drivers against such criminal tendencies to bribe Police officers.
Soliciting or offering a bribe is punishable with an imprisonment of between five and seven years and a fine of up to five times the value of the offered bribe.
On the other hand, forgery also attracts an imprisonment of between five and seven years, under article 276 of the penal code, and a fine of between Rwf3 million and Rwf5 million or one of these penalties.
