A man suspected of circulating fake currency notes was arrested on Monday in Kicukiro District.
Police said that suspect, who was caught with Rwf15, 000, all fake, was going around shops buying different goods using the counterfeit notes.
The notes were mainly in the denominations of Rwf5, 000.
According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for City of Kigali, the suspect was identified and reported by one of the victims.
"He was trying to buy sugar; he paid the shop attendant a forged note of Rwf5000. The victim realised shortly that the note was fake, he called out neighbours, they apprehended the suspect as he tried to flee and handed him over to Police with the exhibits," CIP Kayigi said.
He called for continued vigilance against such "criminal individuals."
“It's not the first time we have arrested people connected to this criminal ring, all because people have been vigilant not to fall prey," CIP Kayigi said.
Last week, Police in Nyarugenge District arrested three people in Muhima Sector after they found them making fake currency notes.
Counterfeiting money and its circulation is punishable with an imprisonment of between five and seven years and a fine of not less than Rwf7 million, under article 269 of the new Penal Code.
