Police in Rubavu District is holding a man suspected to be part of the ring of drug traffickers.
The Police spokesperson for the Western region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, said that Jean Damascene Minani, 25, was arrested on April 28 in Mukingo Village of Byahi Cell in Rubavu Sector, where quantities of cannabis were hidden separately.
“Police had information that Minani is deals in drugs. On Saturday at about2:30pm, a resident called the Police that he had trafficked cannabis into the country the previous day,” CIP Gasasira said.
“During the operation, he was first found with pellets of cannabis in his pockets but other bags of cannabis were recovered in a dustbin next his shop,” he added.
“However, Minani tried to bribe the officers with Rwf10, 000 a crime he will also face in courts of law,” CIP Gasasira explained.
Article 641 of the Penal Code stipulates that any person who directly or indirectly offers a gift in order to get an illegal service or refrain from carrying out any usual duties shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of five to seven years and a fine of twice or up to ten times the value of what they had offered in bribes.
Making, importing or selling narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances attracts a prison sentence ranging between three and five years and a fine between Rwf500, 000 and Rwf5 million, as stipulated under article 594 of the penal code.
CIP Gasasira thanked the residents for their continued partnership in identifying drugs dealers, which he said was contributing greatly in tracking and breaking chains of supply.
