Man arrested for offering bribe to Police officer

A man in Ngoma Sector, Huye District identified as Damien Ndayishimiye, 28, was arrested on February 12 for allegedly trying to bribe a police officer on duty, with Rwf200,000.

The bribe was meant to entice the officer into neglecting a criminal file opened on a colleague of Ndayishimiye, who is accused of falsifying and forging documents, and is still on the run.

Police is still investigating his whereabouts.

Police Spokesperson for Southern Province, CSP Hubert Gashagaza, said that the professional officer had alerted his seniors that he had been promised a bribe by a suspect who wanted a criminal file to be corrupted.

“When Ndayishimiye brought the bribe, he was caught red handed while trying to hand it over to the officer and he was immediately arrested,” he said.

“Police officers are well trained and have over and over exhibited the highest level of professionalism. Bribery is therefore not something we can tolerate. Those who seek services should go through the right channels.”

Article 641 of the Penal Code stipulates that any person who offers a gift in order to get an illegal service or refrain from carrying out any usual duties shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of five to seven years and a fine of twice or up to ten times the value of what they had offered in bribes.
