Police in Nyagatare District is holding one John Hatangimana who was apprehended recently as he attempted to bribe a police officer to release his impounded motorcycle.
The suspect was apprehended red-handed as he tried to bribe the officer with Rwf25,000 to release his motorcycle.
The motorcycle had been impounded after the o.wner was found without required riding documents.
According to the Eastern Region Police spokesperson Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, officers impounded the motorcycle after Hatangimana was found without a driver's licence and had violated traffic rules.
“Shortly after officers impounded the motorcycle, Hatangimana approached a police officer requesting for assistance. He went on to tell the officer that he wanted to give him money to have his motorcycle release,” IP Kayigi narrated.
"Hatangimana later returned and was arrested immediately as he attempted to seduce the officer with the illegal money."
“Corruption is a taboo in Rwanda, later alone in Rwanda National Police. Rwandans shouldn't allow such malpractices. Corruption has grave effects on the economy of the country and we all have a collective responsibility of fighting it,” Kayigi said.
He went on to add that such malpractices also have grave effects on the services people receive saying that that’s why the fight against corruption is a call for all Rwandans.
Hatangimana risks a jails sentence of up to five years and a fine of up to ten times the amount he is accuse of, as stipulated in article 640 of the penal code.
