Jean Nsabimana, 25, resident of Mata sector in Nyamagabe District was arrested on July 26 after he was found with fake Rwandan money amounting to Rwf50, 000.
The money was in Rwf5, 000, Rwf2,000 and Rwf1,000 denominations.
The suspect was arrested in Gasaka sector while attempting to purchase goods at a local shop using the fake notes.
Judith Mukaneza, the would-be victim said she decided to call Police after she identified that the money was fake.
He is currently held at Gasaka Police Station as investigations continue.
Nsabimana argued that he was acting on someone else's behalf who had contracted him to circulate it on promise of getting a commission.
The Southern region Police Spokesperson Chief Supt. Hubert Gashagaza said they are still searching for the second suspect.
He also appealed to the business community and the entire public to always verify currency notes thoroughly before any transaction, to avoid falling prey of such people.
“Counterfeit is treacherous to the economy and affects family and personal income. A good citizen should abstain from such an illegal act,” he observed.
Article 604 of the Rwandan penal code states that using or circulating, by any means, items misrepresented as money or negotiable instruments shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of two to five years and a fine of two to ten times the value of the counterfeit money.
