Muhima Police station is holding a 27 year old man, who is suspected of embezzling over US$50, 000 from Kenya commercial bank (KCB)-Rwanda.
Samuel Sekaziga, a resident of Kimironko in Gasabo District stole the money last Friday and was arrested the next day in Nyanza sector of Gisagara district while trying to cross to Burundi with the money.
At the time of his arrest, the suspect already spent US$250 as police managed to recover the remaining money
Sekaziga, a cashier at the KCB-Nyabugogo branch confessed to the crime, and argued that he was forced to steal the money after he learnt that the institution was in the process to sack him.
He also argued that he was tempted to steal the money after the branch manager left the safe unlocked.
“I had heard some rumors that they wanted to sack me because of some few issues I had with my bosses,” Sekaziga told journalists.
After stealing the money, he explained, he jumped on a motorbike that transported him to southern province where he planned to cross to Burundi.
He was arrested after a cyclist, who transported him, notified the police out of suspicion.
The Police Spokesperson ACP Damas Gatare appealed to financial institutions to initiate mechanisms to prevent such robberies.
He commended the public for the continued cooperation to fight and prevent crimes.
He said investigation is underway to identify accomplices.
Once guilty, the suspect will face an imprison sentence of between seven to ten years and a fine of two to five times the value of the embezzled money under article 325 of the penal code.
