Kirehe: Six drug traffickers arrested

Six suspected drug dealers were arrested yesterday in Kirehe District.

The suspects, who include three women were at the time sneaking about 100 kilogrammes of cannabis into the country through river Akagera.

Police identified the suspects as; Frolance Nirere, 35, Mukacyizima Lenatha, 33; Claver  Rurangwa, 35; Xavier Ngirukibonye, 36; Felecien  Ntawukuriryayo, 45; and Naomi Ukwitegetse, 36. 

Ukwitegetse is said to be the owner of the narcotics and was using the five others to traffic the substances to her stores in Kirehe, according to Police.

Ukwitegetse was previous also arrested over the same crime.

They are all currently detained at Mpanga Police Station.

“They were traveling in a group from Tanzania and they were intercepted at about 12:30am shortly after crossing into Rwanda,” said Inspector of Police (IP) Samson Habukuri, the Acting Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province.

“Police in Kirehe had information from a resident that this specific group was involved in this criminal business and that they will be crossing into Rwanda through river Akagera with the narcotics. They were using a wooden boat and they were arrested as they were disembarking from the boat on the Rwandan side,” IP Habakuri said.

IP Habakuri lauded the the role of the local population in the fight against the vice.

Kirehe is said to be one of the drug trafficking routes, where police has equally focused through operations and awareness.
